1.Palaces of Chittorgarh

There are several palaces inside the fort but my favourite is the palace of Rana Kumbha, which is now completely in ruins. There is a sense of poignancy as I walk around the crumbles . Every broken brick has a tale to say.  This palace is the oldest monument in the fort and my favourite moment is to stand here and watch the sun go down over the entire city

The Fateh Prakash Palace is adjacent to this monument but for me the most fascinating monument is Rani Padmini’s palace lying desolate in the pond, shrouded by trees and looking rather forlorn.

2. Temples inside Chittorgarh Fort

Almost every nook and corner of the fort is filled with temples. However if you are running out of time, then do visit the Meera Temple, dedicated to Meerabai, probably one of the few temples dedicated to a human. She was considered a mystic and a devotee of Krishna and was veered as a saint.

There are also temples dedicated to Kali and Shiva as well. There is the Kshemankari Temple, the Kumbha Shyam Temple, Adbuthanath temple besides a few Jain temples on the fort itself and these are all included in the list of Chittorgarh tourist places

3. Towers –  Kirti Stamb and Vijay Stamb

Two towers stand tall here – one is the Kirti Stamb built by a Jain merchant in the 12th century that rises to a height of 22 metres . And the other is the Victory tower called Vijay Stamb that was built by Rana Kumba dedicated to Vishnu. It was built to commemorate a victorious battle and it was open to the public. From reservoirs to step wells, Chittorgarh is surrounded by water bodies that gave the title water fort. I am fascinated by the emerald tinged waters of the Gaumukh. This was like a private bathing pool for the queens and apparently there was an underground tunnel connecting the reservoir and the palaces as well. These are one of the many Chittorgarh tourist places that should not be missed.

Kumbhalgarh Fort is a Mewar fortification on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan in western India. Constructed and expanded in the course of the 15-19th century by Rana Kumbha, Kumbhalgarh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar. I started my day in Jaipur early to avoid the sightseeing crowds at Amer Fort (pronounced as Amer Fort). Located ten kilometres away from Jaipur, the imposing 16th-century sandstone fort stands on a hill. You have an option to ride to the fort atop an elephant (though, an animal rights activist will discourage you!). I chose to walk up, enjoying the views of the Aravalli Hills and Maota Lake that the fort overlooks.

A local guide helped me navigate through the courtyards, temples, and palaces; their walls embellished with glass panels, stone inlays, and spectacular mirror mosaics. I stopped at the Govind Rajasthali Cottage Industries store, located along the Man Sagar Lake, on my way back to the city after sightseeing at Amber Fort. If you do not have the patience for crowded bazaars, you may want to give this a skip! But I personally love this store as it offers so many things and it will definitely meet your shopping needs. Jaipuri quilts and bed sheets, handicrafts, paintings — there are a plethora of options to choose from. While the prices are a bit high, one can rationalise it as a markup for the convenience and variety that the store offers.

Man Sagar Lake: The beauty of a submerged palace

After the customary souvenir shopping, I continued sightseeing in Jaipur and stopped by Man Sagar Lake to admire the deep blue expanse of water. Flanked by the Aravalli hills, this manmade lake was created in the 16th century. The Jal Mahal ‘floats’ in the middle of the lake. This red sandstone palace was built by Jaipur’s founder and ruler, Sawai Jai Singh II, as a pleasure pavilion.

Hawa Mahal : The quintessential landmark

Any guidebook on Jaipur  is bound to feature the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) as a top choice. It’s the proud king on the Jaipur sightseeing trail. Built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1979, the five-storey structure was inspired by the crown of Lord Krishna (a Hindu God). The first impression is indeed charming – a pink honeycombed facade replete with 953 latticed windows.

In the past, ladies of the royal family, not allowed to appear in public, had to observe processions and everyday life from these windows. Entering the compound from the rear gate, the interior was rather unremarkable. I could not help wondering how isolated and dull the life of a royal lady would have been, cloistered inside.

Jaipur’s bazaars and bylanes

Cows parked on road dividers, bells of cyclists in a hurryn, frenzy on the Tripolia Bazar road was both exciting and overwhelming!

On an impulse, I decided to take a detour and got into a bylane. ‘Bhindo ka rasta,’ Google Maps duly announced. Marble and clay busts were lined up on either side of the road, with shops selling statues of Hindu Gods and Indian freedom fighters. I had stumbled upon a perfect spot to practice my street photography!

3.Jaswanth Thada

The Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph located in Jodhpur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II,^[1] and serves as the cremation ground for the royal Rajput family of Marwar.^[2]

The mausoleum is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These sheets are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when illuminated by the Sun.

The cenotaph's grounds feature carved gazebos, a tiered garden, and a small lake. There are three other cenotaphs in the grounds. The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh displays portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur.^[3]

4.Balsamand Lake Palace

Balsamand Lake is a lake situated 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Jodhpur on Jodhpur-Mandore Road. This lake is a popular picnic spot, built in 1159 AD by Gurjara-Pratihara rulers. It was designed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore. The lake has a length of one kilometre (0.62 mi), breadth of 50 metres (160 ft) and a depth of 15 metres (49 ft).

The Balsamand Lake Palace was built later as a summer palace on its shore. The lake is surrounded by lush green gardens that house groves of trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava and plum. Animals and birds like the jackal and peacock also call this place home.

5.Mandore Garden

The 'Mandore gardens', with its charming collection of temples and memorials, and its high rock terraces, is another major attraction. The gardens house the Chhatris (cenotaphs) of many rulers of Jodhpur state. Prominent among them is the chhatri of Maharaja Ajit Singh, built in 1793.

Ravan temple is another attraction at Mandore. It is believed to be the native place of Ravan's wife Mandodari. Ravan is treated as son in law among some local Brahmins.^[3]
